When COVID-19 struck Nova Scotia, theatre shutdown as we knew it. Financial losses for theatre producers were unprecidented and devastating. In response the provincial government promised funding support to theatre and cultural organizations to help them through this pandemic.
Six months later, neither the funding nor a funding plan has been delivered.
Theatre Nova Scotia wants all of its members to remain strong vibrant cultural contributors, from Liverpool to Glace Bay, from Parrsboro to Halifax to the Eastern Shore. It affects theatre employees, contractors, volunteers, audiences and their communities.
On Sept 22nd, thousands of Nova Scotians participated in #BeSceneNS. You told us why you miss live theatre, why theatre matters to you, why you want all the theatres and their talented artists across this province to remain strong and vibrant well into the future.
Thank you for telling us why live Nova Scotian theatre is important to you. Now we ask that you tell your MLA.
How you can help:
1) Write a letter
Craft your own letter
- Identify yourself and your connection to theatre (i.e. I work in the live theatre industry, I am a volunteer with a community theatre organization, I regularly attend live theatre performances at x, y, z)
- Be brief but clear about what you're asking for (you're asking for the provincial government to deliver the promised funding to theatre and cultural organizations)
- Tell your MLA a personal story about why theatre is so important to you and to your region of Nova Scotia. Feel free to use stories you may have shared during #BeSceneNS. They were heartfelt and powerful!
- Close your letter by restating your ask
